i grew up on a council estate in northampton.
raised in part by an aunt. I was bullied for being the boy who wanted to cut hair, and I knew I was different before I had the words for it. My aunt taught me hairdressing as a kind of gift - I call it the gift of connection, and that has stayed with me ever since: the chair is the place where people tell you things they don’t tell anyone els.
That gift took me a long way. Over twenty years ive worked behind the chair for Dior, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen and Tom Ford. and behind the lens for Vogue, Harpers Bazzar, L’Officiel, Numero and Wonderland. As Disco Daddy, Im resident DJ for Day Fever and regular for Soho House - the same energy, just from the booth instead of the chair.
Non of that is the full story, though, ive struggled with addiction, and ive been HIV Positive since 2015. There was a point where I had hit rock bottom - and one morning in a dream three word came to me as a way back: I Can. I Am. I Will. That became I Can I Am and I Will the Community Interest Company I founded to make sure other people don’t have to hit rock bottom before they get to reflect, reset and rise. it now runs in schools with brands, and communities across the UK.
Im currently writing Confessions of a Hairdresser - the book and film version of all of this - and building out the next chapter of ICIAIW’s work in schools and government.
This site is where the whole of it lives, finally, in one place.
